An executive order signed by US Pres. Donald Trump on Wednesday prohibits federal funding for K-12 schools that teach critical race theory (CRT) or gender-related topics.
The education secretary has been given 90 days to develop a strategy for eliminating federal funding and support for what the administration terms "illegal and discriminatory treatment and indoctrination," including curriculum and teacher training related to gender ideology and equity concepts.
The order also reinstates the 1776 Commission, which was originally created during Trump's first term to promote what the administration calls "patriotic education" that focuses on American history.
Trump's common-sense order protects parental rights and ensures students will receive quality education focused on core academics rather than radical ideological instruction based on race and gender. It also expands educational freedom for families to choose the best learning environment for their children.
Trump is overreaching in local education decisions — potentially violating constitutional protection and destabilizing public schools by potentially redirecting funding to private institutions. This order will also scare teachers who may seek to discuss important lessons about diversity and inclusion.
