Charles Bolden is a retired United States Marine Corps Major General, former NASA administrator, and astronaut. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he flew on four space shuttle missions before becoming the first African American to head NASA on a permanent basis, serving from 2009 to 2017.
