Ecuador: Noboa and González Set for Runoff Rematch
Ecuador's conservative incumbent Daniel Noboa and his leftist rival Luisa González will face off in an April 13 runoff election to determine the next president. The vote will be a rematch of the 2023 race, as each candidate received about 44% of the vote in the first round.
This comes as voters headed to the polls on Sunday to elect their president and select all 151 members of the country's National Assembly. To win in the first round, a presidential candidate requires 50% of the vote, or at least 40% with a 10-point lead over its closest opponent.
Ecuador's land borders, which were closed on Saturday as part of heightened security measures in response to alleged attempts by armed groups to destabilize the country, will remain closed on Monday.
Right narrative
Freedom is on the ballot in resource-rich Ecuador as there are only two routes for voters to choose — free market capitalism under Daniel Noboa or a narco-socialist dictatorship under Correa's surrogate Luisa González. Noboa needs a full presidential term to fight the Ecuadorian deep state and bring significant changes to the country.
Left narrative
After nearly a decade following neoliberal prescriptions, Ecuador now has a fragile state and an impoverished people. It's no wonder that drug trafficking and organized crime have skyrocketed — that's part of the local elites' strategy to control society. Noboa must be voted out of office.
Lebanon Forms New Government After Two Years of Deadlock
Lebanon's Pres. Joseph Aoun has announced the formation of a new government under the leadership of newly appointed Nawaf Salam, a former president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This marks the first full-fledged government in the country since 2022.
Elected last month, the president over the weekend signed decrees formally accepting the resignation of the former caretaker government of Najib Mikati, appointing Salam to form the new government, and ordering the formation of a government of 24 ministers.
In a speech on Saturday, Salam said that he will carry out reforms to drag the country out of its severe economic crisis, restore confidence in Lebanon, and implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006.
Pro-establishment narrative
A new political chapter has begun in Lebanon, with Hezbollah excluded from the government for the first time in almost two decades, as the Shia group has lost much of its influence amid changes in regional power dynamics. The West must help the new government dismantle Hezbollah and bring stability to the country.
Establishment-critical narrative
America and its allies have sought to meddle in Lebanese politics to anti-democratically exclude Shia Muslims from the new government, but to no avail, as running the country without them would be impossible. Hezbollah and its allies Amal are part of the Lebanese society and must be treated as such.
Nerd narrative
There's a 35% chance that Lebanon will experience a civil war before 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
French Surgeon Faces Trial for Alleged Abuse of 299 Children
Joel Le Scouarnec, a 73-year-old former surgeon, is set to face trial in Vannes beginning Feb. 24, in what is being called France's largest ever child abuse case. Le Scouarnec faces charges over the alleged assault or rape of 299 children between 1989 and 2014.
According to reports, police have found detailed diaries with chronological records of the alleged assaults, over 300K images, and also child-sized dolls in Le Scouarnec's home.
The prosecutors have alleged that the surgeon carried out many assaults while patients were under anesthesia or in post-surgery recovery, using his medical position to disguise the abuse as professional examinations
Narrative A
The systemic failure of French institutions enabled a dangerous predator to continue practicing medicine despite clear warning signs, with hospitals and medical authorities repeatedly ignoring red flags and failing to protect vulnerable patients.
Narrative B
The charges against Le Scouarnec are deeply disturbing. Given the extraordinary sensitivity of all allegations against him, it's important to allow due process to continue in his remaining trials so that all vital details can be clarified in a court of law.
Nerd narrative
There's an 8% chance that Emmanuel Macron will cease to be president of France before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trump to Impose 25% Tariffs on All Steel, Aluminum Imports
US Pres. Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday that he will implement a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports. The formal announcement is scheduled for Monday.
On his way from Florida to New Orleans, Trump said: "Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25 percent tariff. Aluminum, too." Canada is one of the largest suppliers of aluminum to the US.
In addition, he plans to announce "reciprocal tariffs," which would match US tariff rates to those of trading partners, stating, "If they are charging us 130% and we're charging them nothing, it's not going to stay that way."
Pro-Trump narrative
The tariffs are essential for protecting American industry and ensuring fair trade practices. The current system allows other countries to take advantage of the US through unfair practices, and these measures will level the playing field for US firms and reduce dependence on foreign steel and aluminum.
Anti-Trump narrative
These tariffs will harm the global economy and trigger retaliatory measures from trading partners. The measures will increase costs for US manufacturers, potentially lead to job losses in steel-using industries, and risk sparking a broader trade war that could damage international economic cooperation.
Nerd narrative
There's a 13% chance the US Congress will pass a bill implementing Trump's tariff policies in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
UK: Health Minister Sacked Over WhatsApp Messages
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has sacked Health Minister Andrew Gwynne and suspended him from the Labour Party after The Mail on Sunday published WhatsApp messages he had sent in a group chat called "Trigger Me Timbers."
The messages — exchanged between 2019 and early 2022 — included comments hoping for the death of a 72-year-old constituent who hadn't voted Labour, remarks about Labour MP Diane Abbott, as well as content suggesting someone was "too Jewish" and questioning if they were in Mossad.
Gwynne's responsibilities as Health Minister included overseeing pandemic preparedness, infectious diseases, and health improvement initiatives. He has represented variations of the Gorton and Denton constituency since 2005.
Left narrative
The swift dismissal of Andrew Gwynne highlights a commitment to maintaining high standards within Labour's ranks. In an era of fragile public trust in politicians, such decisive moves are essential to upholding accountability. By launching a thorough investigation into the incident, the British government can reassure the public that any further misconduct will be addressed as expected.
Right narrative
The leaked messages reveal a party that publicly champions progressive values but privately indulges in toxic behavior. Labour MPs' language and tone in these messages starkly contradict the moral high ground they often claim to occupy. Starmer's government, like its predecessors, seems plagued by a disconnect between its public persona and the reality of its members' conduct.
Nerd narrative
There's a 66% chance that the UK will have a Labour prime minister on Jan. 1, 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
New Zealand Raises 'Concern' Over Cook Islands-China Deal
New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has expressed "significant concern" as the Cook Islands' Prime Minister Mark Brown prepares to travel to Beijing to sign a comprehensive strategic partnership deal with China.
The Cook Islands has been operating as a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand since 1965. Its 17K citizens hold New Zealand citizenship and receive defense and security support from Wellington.
A spokesperson for the deputy prime minister accused the Cook Islands of failing "to properly consult New Zealand," adding, "This lack of consultation is a matter of significant concern to the New Zealand government."
Pro-China narrative
The Cook Islands has every right to pursue independent international agreements that benefit its economic development and national interests. The partnership with China focuses solely on trade and infrastructure and, therefore, doesn't require New Zealand's approval or oversight.
Anti-China narrative
The Cook Islands' lack of transparency and consultation on a major agreement with China violates constitutional obligations and raises significant security concerns for the region. This move undermines its special relationship with New Zealand and its defense and foreign affairs coordination arrangements.
UK Asylum Deaths Hit Record High
The United Kingdom's Home Office reported 51 asylum seeker deaths in its care during 2024, marking an 11-person increase from the previous year and representing a dramatic rise from just four deaths recorded in 2019.
The Home Office initially underreported the 2024 death toll as 30, later acknowledging an additional 21 deaths after issuing an apology for providing incomplete data through their freedom of information team.
Among the documented cases, approximately one-third of the initial 30 reported deaths were attributed to suspected suicide, with a similar number listed as unknown causes. Only eight were definitively linked to natural causes or illness.
Narrative A
This rise in deaths is alarming and must be investigated further. Asylum or refugee status isn't routinely recorded as part of the death registration process, which means the number of deaths of individuals seeking asylum in the UK could be much worse than what's been reported. More must be done to hold the Home Office to account.
Narrative B
The government has been doing more in terms of oversight of refugee oversight policy, including establishing clear lines for reporting and accountability and providing additional training for the staff in charge of managing large projects and contracted providers. Officials are continuing to look for other ways to improve the system.
Trump: Palestinians Will Not Be Able to Return to Gaza Under Plan
US Pres. Donald Trump said in an interview released on Monday that Palestinians would not be able to return to Gaza after being displaced from the enclave under his plan. Trump stated that they would have "much better housing," adding that he was "talking about building a permanent place for them."
Trump has repeated that the US would "own" Gaza, saying in the interview that the strip is a "big real estate site." Arab states have rejected the plan, with Hamas condemning it and warning that tackling the "Palestinian cause with the mentality of a real estate dealer is a recipe for failure."
Separately, Hamas announced on Monday that the next hostage-prisoner exchange, which was scheduled for Saturday, will be postponed "until further notice," citing Israeli violations of the cease-fire agreement. Hamas claimed that Israel had obstructed the flow of humanitarian aid.
Pro-establishment narrative
Trump's proposal only emboldens extremists in the Israeli government, thus why the Biden admin. was against such a move. Furthermore, relocating Palestinians from Gaza could destabilize Jordan and Egypt, two critical US allies in the region. As the tensions remain high, it is imperative that the cease-fire holds.
Pro-Israel narrative
Trump understands that as long as Hamas and other radical Islamist groups remain on Israel's doorstep, there will always be more conflict and misery. Trump's suggestion to relocate the Palestinians is a move of compassion that would both ensure the safety of civilians and Israel's security.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Only the most ill-informed of people do not recognize that Trump's suggestion equates to the forcible deportation and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians — violating fundamental tenets of international law and the Geneva Conventions. Indeed, this was the plan all along, as even the Biden admin. floated the idea of forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza.
Nerd narrative
There's a 6% chance that Israel will establish direct governmental control of the Gaza Strip in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trump Orders Halt to Penny Production
US Pres. Donald Trump on Sunday night announced that he has instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cease production of pennies, writing that minting "is so wasteful."
The US Mint's 2024 annual report said each penny costs 3.69 cents to manufacture and distribute, marking the 19th consecutive fiscal year the production cost has exceeded its face value.
The US Mint lost $85.3M producing pennies in fiscal year 2024, with the one-cent coin accounting for 54% of the 5.87B coins produced during this period.
Republican narrative
This continues the fulfillment of Trump's campaign promise to have DOGE cut wasteful expenditures. But this is also one of the President's most bipartisan ideas, as figures on both sides of the political spectrum over the years have lamented the high cost of minting pennies.
Democratic narrative
While some may consider this a reasonable proposal at first, it's quite clear that the Constitution granted the power to mint currency to Congress, not the president. In addition, stopping penny minting sadly won't be as cost-saving as some would have you believe.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that the United States will first mint a coin worth $1 billion or more by December 2032, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
