The Facts
As part of a Valentine's day promo, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Monday encouraged anyone who's ex- or current partners were involved in illegal gun activity to share information.
Their message was met with wide ranging criticism, with some reflecting it would prompt fraudulent reporting to the police and others citing the AFT's controversial past firearms operations.
The Spin
Right narrative
The AFT are hypocrites. Obama, his ex-Attorney General and even President Biden's son Hunter have allegedly been embroiled in violating firearms laws. The tweet was insensitive and ineffective.
Left narrative
This is part of the Biden administration's push against gun violence. Initiatives in areas with high rates of gun violence like Chicago and NYC have successfully been tackled, with thousands of guns confiscated since last year.
