    The Facts

    • Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, has been named to replace Biden's COVID response coordinator, Jeff Zients, who's scheduled to step down in April.

    • The move comes as the White House is attempting to shift its messaging away from the pandemic.

    The Spin

    Left narrative

Zients did his job well – getting 80% of Americans vaccinated, distributing tests and making sure schools could stay open – but this is the perfect time for someone with experience in government and business to pass the baton to Dr. Jha, an expert in public health.

    Right narrative

With the threat of another wave of the virus looming over America, Zients had to go. His tenure was filled with screwups, including poor response to the Delta and Omicron variants, and a testing shortage at Christmas time. Dr. Jha has his work cut out for himself.

    Narrative C

We've entered another chapter in the pandemic. Omicron BA.2 may ultimately prove to be more infectious, but what matters is severe illness and death, which is trending down toward levels not that different from seasonal flu. Let's respect the public's pandemic fatigue and start moving on.
