    The Facts

    • A jury in Washington, DC on Tues. heard opening arguments in the case of Michael Sussmann – a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign accused of lying to the FBI in the weeks leading up to the election.

    • Sussmann brought internet data to FBI General Counsel James Baker that purported to tie then-candidate Donald Trump to the Russian entity Alfa Bank. He stands accused of lying to the bureau when he stated that he shared the material as a concerned citizen, rather than on behalf of a particular client.

    The Spin

    Left narrative

Durham's investigation is a clear example of political prosecution. Regardless of whether or not he is successful in bringing convictions, he has already convinced right-wing media pundits and politicians that there was a wide-ranging conspiracy to bring down Trump using false information. This is simply untrue, and Durham's charges are overstated.

    Right narrative

Durham is a career Dept. of Justice prosecutor whose convictions include that of the notorious Boston criminal Whitey Bulger. This trial is just the tip of the iceberg in showing how Clinton and her operatives were willing to lie to law enforcement to falsely paint Trump as a Russian agent ahead of the US presidential election.
