Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that he will run for re-election in 2024. He made his announcement after a Kremlin award ceremony for military veterans and posted a video statement after the event declaring his decision.
Putin has led Russia for about 24 years, serving as the country’s president and prime minister during alternating terms. The 71-year-old is unlikely to face any serious opposition and is poised to secure another six-year term when Russians cast their votes on March 17.

Putin's invasion of Ukraine has caused thousands of deaths and completely diminished Russia's standing in the global community, yet his carefully coordinated media pushes propaganda that keeps him "popular" amongst Russians. His reelection campaign smacks of continued autocracy.
