The Facts

  • FBI Director Christopher Wray announced his resignation at a town hall in the FBI's headquarters on Wednesday, stating that he would serve until the end of the Biden administration in January 2025. He has three years remaining in his 10-year term.

  • This comes after US Pres.-elect Donald Trump, who appointed Wray in 2017, nominated Kash Patel to lead the country's principal federal law enforcement agency. Patel has been actively meeting senators to build support for his confirmation.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

Sadly, this resignation takes the FBI one step farther away from being independent and outside of the influence of politics. If Trump didn't want to be investigated, he should've better avoided taking suspicious actions. A conspiracy theorist seemingly loyal just to Trump will now have an almost clear path to leading the bureau.

Republican narrative

Wray had to go in order for the bureau to be reformed. In addition to being uncooperative with Congress' attempts at oversight, Wray orchestrated the politically motivated investigations of Trump and had the gall to question the severity of Trump's injuries after he was nearly assassinated. Patel will make the changes the bureau needs.
