The Facts

  • Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as the new head of the group's political bureau on Tuesday after the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. Israel has accused Sinwar of being the “mastermind” of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack.

  • Sinwar is one of several men Israel believes orchestrated the attack, including the leader of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, who Israel said it killed last month. Hamas didn't confirm his death.

The Spin

Pro-Israel narrative

Hamas is now being run by a butcher who believes that he is engaged in a messianic struggle to bring about judgment day. Though some may claim that Hamas and men like Sinwar have political goals, the reality is they are led by an extremist ideology that seeks the complete destruction of Israel.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Israel's recent spree of assassinations only provides further evidence that it is simply not interested in a cease-fire or ending the war. Sinwar's appointment ultimately changes very little, as the group has proved capable of adapting to challenges and its structure allows for dynamic leadership. Israel has continued to demonstrate that it only seeks to escalate tensions and prevent peace.
