The Facts
Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old unauthorized immigrant from Venezuela, was Wednesday convicted of murdering 22-year-old US nursing student Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Riley was murdered on Feb. 22 while out on a run. Ibarra, whose DNA was found under Riley's fingernails, was also found guilty of attempted rape and attempted kidnapping, among other charges.

Republican narrative
Jose Ibarra should never have been in the country, but at least we can rest assured he's being punished for his crimes. This case highlights the dark reality Americans are living in; while Ibarra was allowed to cross the border and search the country for his next victim, another man, Daniel Penny, is being prosecuted in NYC for saving train passengers from an unhinged individual who was threatening women and children. The government needs to empower men like Penny and deport men like Ibarra.
Democratic narrative
The Republicans have cynically politicized Riley's tragic murder, using her death to stoke hatred against all immigrants and advance divisive policies. By reducing her memory to a rallying cry against immigration, GOP leaders like Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene distract from bipartisan solutions and deeper societal issues. This exploitative scheme not only undermines true reform but disrespects Riley's legacy.
