The Facts

  • Russia conducted a "massive strike" on Ukraine's energy infrastructure using cruise missiles on Wednesday, killing one civilian in Dnipropetrovsk and injuring six in the Kharkiv region.

  • DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy provider, said: "As a result of the large-scale attack, the equipment at the thermal power plants was seriously damaged," adding that it was the thirteenth attack of its kind this year.

The Spin

Pro-Ukraine narrative

Missile attacks of this nature take time to prepare. It's clear Putin deliberately chose to attack Ukraine on Christmas Day, and when the country is reeling in temperatures just a few degrees Celsius above zero. But Russia's evil, inhuman intentions will not break Ukraine or distort its Christmas.

Pro-Russia narrative

Putin has repeatedly warned that Ukrainian terrorist attacks on residential buildings and military targets inside Russia using US-made long-range missiles will be met with a harsh response. This was the latest iteration. Russia isn't weaponizing winter, Ukraine is.
