The Facts

  • German authorities announced the arrest of a US citizen living in Germany on Thursday, on charges of offering "sensitive information belonging to the US military" to Chinese government officials.

  • The Office of the Federal Prosecutor claims that the accused, identified only as Martin D., had worked with the US military in some capacity "until recently." He then allegedly reached out to Chinese officials this year.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

The spate of recent spying arrests implicating China in Germany and other European countries comes as little surprise, as the People's Republic of China's (PRC) wide array of espionage activities span all aspects of business, society, and culture. As relations between the EU and China continue to deteriorate, it is crucial for free countries to remain alert to covert attempts to advance Chinese interests. Experts believe that these cases represent only the tip of the iceberg.

Pro-China narrative

Sinophobic hysteria in the West has reached a fever pitch with further dubious spying allegations. Indeed, countries like Germany have responded to China's peaceful rise on the world stage by tarring everyone, from Chinese exchange students to visitors of the nation, as potential national security threats. Without any genuine proof, accusations that China accepted an offer from a disgruntled military contractor remain unfounded.
