The Tripwire of Irish Borders
CounterPunchMAR 30 2022
The ruling by the UK Supreme Court has reaffirmed NI's disrespected position within the union. While maybe technically lawful, practical changes must still be applied in order to limit the damage done by Brexit, with NI unable to govern itself until the protocol is replaced with arrangements that return the UK's internal markets to normality.
NI is currently being held hostage by the DUP, who claim to be protesting the protocol, but in reality, wish to not play second fiddle in the Stormont administration. While the situation may not be ideal for many, to block self-governance in NI during a period of cost-of-living hardship is selfish. This type of behavior will only continue until the partition in Ireland is ended.
