The Facts
A faculty member was fatally shot in a laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday. University police confirmed the shooting occurred at a building that houses the school's chemistry department.
After the police received a 911 call reporting shots fired at Caudill Labs shortly after 1 p.m. (local time), the University sent an emergency alert and a lockdown warning, asking students and staff to barricade themselves.

While it's too early to speculate as to what could've been the suspect's motivation for killing the UNC faculty member, North Carolina has seen a rise in gun violence-related incidents, with an average of 1,470 people dying per year. The state's pistol purchasing permit and concealed carry weapons permitting systems must be strengthened to prevent such tragedies.
Right narrative
Monday's horrific incident was clearly carried out by an individual with mental health issues, who had made threats against UNC faculty members. Using a tragedy to discuss politics or find ways to undermine the Second Amendment is unacceptable. Restricting law-abiding Americans' access to firearms will never stop senseless acts of violence.
