The first debate of the Australian general election was held Tuesday between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Coalition leader Peter Dutton in an event hosted by Sky News Australia and the Daily Telegraph.

The debate was dominated by cost-of-living issues, with Albanese defending the government’s record and pointing to A$17 billion in tax cuts in the March budget. Meanwhile, Dutton championed the Coalition’s proposed fuel excise cut.

Both political leaders accused one another of misleading the public. While the prime minister claimed that “the only gas policy that the Coalition have is the gaslighting of the Australian public,” Dutton described Labor’s attacks on Coalition cuts as “very dishonest.”

The debate was seen by several political commentators and outlets as a cautious affair, with neither leader landing a decisive blow. Albanese, however, was declared the winner by Sky News, winning 44 votes out of a 100-strong audience poll, with Dutton winning 35 and 21 remaining undecided.

Following the debate, official social media accounts for the Coalition—including both the Liberal Party of Australia and the National Party of Australia—posted graphics pre-emptively declaring Dutton the winner before Sky officially announced the result.

Prime Minister Albanese handled himself capably in his debate against Peter Dutton. He held the opposition leader to account for his deceit over the Coalition’s energy policy, as well as the fantasy of the Coalition’s nuclear policy. As evidenced by Sky’s poll, the public clearly agrees that the prime minister won the debate.
