The greatest problem facing Australia’s Indigenous communities is the gap between First Nation peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. The difference in outcomes between these two groups across education, the economy, and health is unacceptable. To remedy this, the Australian Labor Party is committed to funding the measures necessary to bring Indigenous peoples on par with their non-Indigenous counterparts, to ensure all Australians have equal opportunities.
What Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples need is practical, results-driven action, not grandiose constitutional schemes. A Dutton-led government will prioritize tangible improvements in Australia’s most disadvantaged Indigenous communities. By investing in housing, enabling communities to harness the economic potential of their land, and fixing underperforming federal programs, a Coalition government will drive meaningful, lasting change for First Nations peoples.
Australia’s First Nation peoples are still suffering under systemic racism and discrimination. The failure of the 2023 Voice Referendum unambiguously shows that anti-Indigenous attitudes continue to hold sway. If Australia is to heal the divisions of the past, it must engage in thorough policy-making that builds a future based on justice, self-determination, and cultural preservation.
