This law protects traditional marriage and family values that form the foundation of Burkinabe society. The legislation modernizes family law while preserving cultural norms that locals view as authentic African values, not foreign imports from the very Western nations that once colonized Africans and now attempt to assert moral authority over the continent.
The criminalization of same-sex relations creates discrimination and violates fundamental human rights guaranteed under international law. This legislation contradicts the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and denies citizens their right to private life without fear. The law is a dangerous step backward for equality and human dignity in Burkina Faso.
