The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Guinea-Bissau’s military coup is an unacceptable assault on democratic governance and deserves unequivocal condemnation. The African Union and ECOWAS have rightly denounced this brazen effort to undermine hard-won democratic progress after citizens engaged peacefully in the electoral process. Their firm stance underscores the urgent need to restore constitutional authority, release detained officials, and protect the integrity of the region’s democratic institutions.

Establishment-critical narrative

The military intervention exposed Embaló’s entrenched scheme to rig the electoral process through alliances with powerful drug networks and external sponsors. This leader, acting as a neocolonial proxy, dissolved parliament, ruled by decree, and systematically blocked credible opposition to entrench himself in office. The intervention ultimately halted planned manipulation and shielded Guinea-Bissau from a deepening slide into authoritarian rule.
