The Spin

Democratic narrative

Cutting this relatively small grant program is not only illogical but an insult to crime victims. If federal waste exists, it's not in this program, which was created by the fiscally conservative Reagan administration 40 years ago after he recognized how many people were in need. After decades of helping millions of people, Trump has decided to rip it all away, putting vulnerable communities in even more danger.

Republican narrative

Despite lies to the contrary, Trump is defending crime victims more than anyone else by empowering law enforcement, not abstract grant programs. The anger shown towards Trump's budget cuts shows just how bloated the federally funded nonprofit industry has become — a bureaucratic rot that Trump is trying to carefully untangle.
