The scourge of police abductions and mysterious deaths in custody has become an epidemic in Kenya, and it's becoming clear that the authorities are abusing their power to silence dissent against them and the Ruto government. Activists can only hope that the government finds and convicts the perpetrators, enacts reforms to protect human rights, and is forthright with Kenyans about what exactly happened to Ojwang.
Ojwang's death is a tragedy, but contrary to activist claims the government has moved at remarkable speed in this process. The state has moved swiftly to get to the bottom of this, meaning that much criticism against the government is misguided. The opposition has shown more interest in political games than reforming the police, and politicians should take accountability for appointing police leadership without proper vetting.
