The Spin

Narrative A

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for international aid. Poor infrastructure, environmental degradation and climate change exacerbate disaster risks in Sudan. Global actors must respond swiftly to prevent further tragedy and help affected communities rebuild and recover with dignity and support.

Narrative B

It's an outrage that the West might be spurned to intervene in response to this disaster given that Sudan had already been facing facing famine, civil war and mass rape, yet humanitarian assistance from nations like the U.S. was cut. For the population of Sudan to be protected from further atrocities, richer nations cannot provide isolated support for this tragic incident, but must make plans for sustained efforts to address an ongoing genocide they have so far failed to notice.
