The Spin

Narrative A

The military government's measures are essential to maintain stability and public order in a nation facing serious security threats from jihadist groups. The current political system has failed to effectively address these threats, and interim restrictions on political activities and a strict audit of the obscure finances of the country's political parties are necessary to implement reforms that will bolster national unity and security.

Narrative B

The suspension of political parties represents a further dangerous step towards dictatorship and undermines Mali's democratic foundations, to which the military government also claims to be committed. The junta is systematically dismantling constitutional guarantees and civil liberties and using security concerns as a pretext to consolidate its power indefinitely, jeopardizing the hard-won democratic gains made since 1991.
