NHS Fife harassed a courageous nurse who stood up for women's sex-based rights after she objected to sharing a changing room with a biologically male colleague. The health board shamefully tried to silence her, dragged out the investigation for an unreasonable length of time and squandered taxpayers' money defending their indefensible actions. Women shouldn't need bravery to tell employers that biological men have no place in spaces designed for female safety, dignity and privacy.
The tribunal unanimously dismissed all allegations against Dr Upton and nearly all claims against the board, finding insufficient evidence that trans women pose greater risk in changing rooms than other women. Trans equality is part of the fight for women's equality since both cis and trans women face systemic misogyny and gendered violence. Rigid gender policing such as this ruling sets feminism back decades and upholds patriarchy by undermining intersectional progress.
