Pope Leo XIV Urges Russia-Ukraine Dialogue in First Christmas Address

Is Europe morally bankrupt for failing to condemn Israeli violence, or is the Pope ignoring Hamas's use of human shields?

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Heeding Pope Leo's call, conscience demands clarity: Russia's war in Ukraine and Israel's devastation of Gaza both violate human dignity and international law. Power cannot excuse bombing civilians, causing starvation, or using repression. We cannot rank some suffering above others. Justice requires condemning all aggressors equally — or we abandon morality altogether.

Establishment-critical narrative

Those who support Ukraine's resistance while condemning Israel in Gaza — or the reverse — also betray conscience. They preach peace while funding weapons, defend their chosen side, and ignore inconvenient facts. This selective outrage sends young people to die and civilians to starve, yet they call it virtue. Peace cannot be built by cheering for weapons and excusing our allies.
