Romania's Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) rejected right-wing candidate Calin Georgescu's bid for the May presidential election rerun, citing his failure to comply with electoral regulations and violation of democratic principles.
The decision came after Romania's Constitutional Court had previously annulled November's first-round election results due to alleged Russian interference through 800 TikTok accounts supporting Georgescu, who had unexpectedly won that round.
Georgescu, who is currently under criminal investigation for alleged membership in a fascist organization and communicating false information about campaign financing, has consistently denied all wrongdoing while leading opinion polls with approximately 40% support.
