Nezza sings national anthem in Spanish at Dodgers as protest against immigration raids
GuardianJUN 22
This brave act of cultural pride deserves celebration, not criticism. FDR commissioned this Spanish version of the national anthem in 1945, making it completely legitimate and historically significant. When Latino families are being torn apart by aggressive raids, singing the anthem in Spanish sends a powerful message of solidarity and belonging.
Sports should remain apolitical spaces where Americans unite regardless of background. Deliberately defying the team's reasonable request to sing in English creates unnecessary division and disrespects the traditional format expected by fans who came to enjoy baseball, not political protests.
