The Trump administration on Wednesday announced it's moving to rescind federal approval for New York City's congestion pricing program, which had been charging vehicles $9 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street since Jan. 5, 2025.
The administration informed New York of its plans via a letter from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. Duffy wrote that the program was "not authorized by law," calling it a "slap in the face" to commuters and a hindrance to small businesses."
Hochul vowed to fight the administration's decision in court, saying the US "is a nation of laws, not ruled by a king." The program remains in effect.
The congestion pricing program harms working-class Americans and small business owners. Commuters have already paid for these highways through gas taxes, and this additional toll leaves them with no free alternative for travel. While impeding commerce, the program also makes New York City accessible only to the elite.
Congestion pricing was lawfully approved by the federal government and has already proven successful in reducing traffic, improving air quality, and providing critical funding for public transportation improvements. It has even increased foot traffic in business districts. New York should fight the Trump administration to prevent this block.
