This news brings previous scandal into the spotlight. Even if Warburton's decisions reflected a one-off mistake, his political legacy will be defined by a failure to uphold the standards of public office, while the lack of clarity provided by an investigation that went nowhere in his lifetime highlights ongoing transparency failures in Westminster. Nonetheless, his early death remains a personal tragedy and the privacy of his friends and family should be respected at this difficult time.
All politicians are human and Warburton, like all of us, wasn't without his flaws. However, that is no excuse to forget that he was a man cleared of any wrongdoing through the proper channels. After the media scrum that surrounded him (and damaged his mental health) dissipated, he worked hard to turn his life around and continued to achieve a remarkable legacy in excess of his political record. His death is a tragedy.
