This world-leading vaccination program is a victory for public health, preventing more than 100,000 people from contracting a painful infection and saving the NHS £7.9 million over the next decade. The government has listened to the advice of health experts and acted quickly, with this vaccine offering the means to tackle both rising gonorrhoea rates and antibiotic resistance.
While the government should be applauded for initiating this vaccination scheme, the next step is to ensure that it implements the program correctly. The authorities need to identify those who could benefit from this vaccination and make them aware of it, as vaccinating these people will reduce the burden on sexual health services and curb the spread of the infection.
