Cutting welfare is not the answer to the government's continuing challenges. Instead, Labour should focus on raising taxes on the wealthiest individuals and corporations who can afford to contribute more. Amid escalating defense costs and a global crisis, the burden should not fall on the most vulnerable. Slashing welfare only deepens inequality, while taxing the richest would ensure a fairer distribution of resources and help fund necessary national security measures without punishing those already struggling.
Labour backbenchers may whine, but rising welfare costs — especially in health-related benefits — are unsustainable and divert funds from essential areas like defense. Reforming the disability benefits system, ensuring better support for work transitions, and addressing long-term inefficiencies will foster self-sufficiency and reduce dependency. Strategic cuts are necessary to maintain a balanced budget and ensure resources are allocated where they’re most needed.
