Paktiawal's death is an example of a system failing at the most basic level of human decency. ICE stopped paying third-party medical providers, gutted oversight offices and blocked congressional inspections, creating conditions where preventable deaths are inevitable. Tens of people have been dying while in ICE custody and that demands accountability, not deflection.
Paktiawal had an expired parole status and a felony fraud arrest, making his detention a lawful, targeted enforcement action — not a humanitarian crisis. ICE followed protocols, transported him immediately to Parkland Hospital and attempted multiple lifesaving measures before his death. Despite the tragic result, ICE did all it could and the system worked as designed.
