This meeting was a campaign prop designed to distract from Flávio's scandal-ridden ties to Vorcaro, rather than a serious diplomatic moment. Tying Brazil's foreign policy to Trump would mean subordinating national interests to one family's political survival for the sake of an unreliable commitment — Trump, after-all, abandoned Jair Bolsonaro the moment Lula offered a better deal.
Government-critical narrative
This wasn't some desperate photo grab, as the White House did formally invite Flávio Bolsonaro to discuss real issues like cartel violence. While Lula has begged Trump not to designate the largest Brazilian drug cartels as terrorist organizations, Flávio seized the opportunity to show whose side he is on and directly address what Brazilian voters care most about.
