Report: China's New Nuclear Submarine Sinks at Shipyard

The Facts

  • China's most advanced nuclear-powered attack submarine sank alongside a pier at the Wuchang Shipyard in late May or early June, a senior US defense official said Thursday.

  • The first of Beijing's Zhou-class line of submarines, the vessel was reportedly designed to stalk and attack ships and escape undetected, and was undergoing preparations for its first sea trials at the time of the sinking.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

The mysterious sinking of a nuclear submarine is a stunning setback for China's naval ambitions. This fiasco has not only exposed potential flaws in China's rapidly expanding military program, but has also raised concerns about safety standards and accountability within the nation's defense industry. This could potentially go as far as to scupper China's maritime aspirations.

Pro-China narrative

These reports are merely US propaganda. China has displayed breathtaking maritime ambition in recent decades, and has swiftly evolved from a coastal defense force to a formidable blue-water fleet. Washington fears Beijing's evolving naval prowess, and is spreading rumors to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific security landscape.

Nerd narrative

There's a 4% chance that China will launch a military invasion of any country other than Taiwan before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: Argentina's Poverty Rate Rises to 52.9%

The Facts

  • According to government data published Thursday, Argentina's poverty rate has increased from 41.7% in the second half of 2023 to 52.9% in the first half of 2024.

  • About 15.7M Argentinians now live below the poverty line. This comes as Pres. Javier Milei has implemented stringent austerity measures since December intended to address inflation and the nation's budget deficit.

The Spin

Narrative A

Due to Pres. Milei's radical reforms Argentina's economic woes have only intensified. The self-proclaimed anti-establishment, anarcho-capitalist president's drastic measures, aimed at slashing welfare and provincial funding, have exacerbated the country's dire financial situation. His aggressive approach and polarizing rhetoric have hampered his ability to implement meaningful change. Ultimately, the people of Argentina are left grappling with an increasingly bleak economic landscape.

Narrative B

Pres. Milei has tackled Argentina's economic woes head-on, implementing shock therapy reforms to slash government spending and reduce inflation. Despite skepticism and dire predictions, Argentina's economy has shown surprising growth, with a 2.3% year-over-year increase in gross domestic product and a cooling inflation rate. While critics feared deep recession and economic pain, early indicators suggest Milei's aggressive cuts might be yielding results.

Nerd narrative

There's a 15% chance that Argentina will fully dollarize its economy before 2028, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Panama: Darien Gap Crossings Down 35% in 2024

The Facts

  • Recent data indicates that the number of migrants crossing the Darien Gap has decreased by 35% from January to Sept. 25 in comparison to the same period last year.

  • The first nine months of 2024 saw nearly 260K migrants enter Panama via Darien, according to Panama's National Border Service. President José Raul Mulino has blocked jungle transit routes and increased deportations with US assistance since entering office on July 1.

The Spin

Democratic narrative

This is evidence of the success of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' plan to reduce the number of illegal migrants crossing the US-Mexico border via collaboration with Mexico and other Central American countries. Biden has banned asylum for illegal migrants who crossed the border and has fulfilled his promise to decrease the flow of illegal migrants passing through Panama's Darien Gap. Biden is committed to ending this illegal activity.

Republican narrative

Despite these numbers — and despite a Biden promise to prevent the flow of a record number of illegal migrants heading toward the US-Mexican border — the US continues to experience a catastrophic border crisis. The Biden administration is responsible for border security, law enforcement, and ensuring the safety of Americans. Unfortunately for them, history will remember them for their complete failure.

Establishment-critical narrative

At first, this policy may seem like a good idea. Yet, it is doomed to fail and force vulnerable people further into the hands of human trafficking gangs. Desperate migrants flee either poverty or persecution, so they are already willing to take significant risks on their journey to the US border. Blocking this route will only drive them further underground and possibly taking more dangerous routes.

Dozens Dead Across Southeast After Hurricane Helene's Landfall in Florida

The Facts

  • At least 37 storm-related deaths have been confirmed across multiple Southeastern US states in the path of Hurricane Helene, which made landfall near Perry, Fla., as a Category 4 storm on Thursday night.

  • According to state and county authorities, the death toll from the storm includes 17 fatalities in South Carolina, 11 in Georgia, seven in Florida, and two in North Carolina.

The Spin

Narrative A

Climate change has made weather events from rains and storms to droughts and wildfires more extreme and common, and the deadly Hurricane Helene must serve as an alert. Leaders must take action soon to mitigate such disasters and combat climate change before these extreme events go beyond society's ability to effectively prepare for them.

Narrative B

It's easy to blame any strong hurricane on climate change, but in reality, they're usually influenced by a myriad of factors that have nothing to do with global warming. More research is needed before we can establish any direct causal link between the two.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that at least 12 North Atlantic hurricanes will occur in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Al Fayed Scandal: New Allegations Linked to Fulham FC

The Facts

  • The late Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of both British department store Harrods and soccer team Fulham FC, is facing new allegations of sexual abuse related to his ownership of the soccer club from 1997-2013.

  • The legal group Justice for Harrods Survivors, which already represents 60 alleged victims, said that they have now received over 200 inquiries from additional victims on accusations including serial rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of minors.

The Spin

Narrative A

Mohamed Al Fayed will go down as among the most notorious abusers in recent history. His money and power, particularly as the owner of Harrods, allowed him to build a dangerously toxic work environment where he could abuse women with impunity. It's tragic that due to this power, his victims only felt capable of speaking up after his death.

Narrative B

This case goes beyond a toxic work environment and to the top of British society. It's no wonder that the man who had financial ties to members of parliament and had a relationship with the former Duke of Windsor was never prosecuted. Women were likely kept quiet not just by their powerful boss but by the entire upper echelon of British society — this is an issue of deep systemic abuse.

Trump, Zelenskyy Meet in NY

The Facts

  • Former US Pres. Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, met with Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Trump Tower in New York on Friday.

  • Prior to the meeting, Trump characterized his relationship with Zelenskyy as "very good" while also saying he has a "very good relationship" with Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin. Trump noted that the three-year war between the countries "has to end" because Zelenskyy and his country have "gone through hell like few countries have."

The Spin

Republican narrative

Trump showed his diplomatic side by agreeing to meet with Zelenskyy despite the Ukrainian president's criticisms of the former US president. Trump's relationship with Putin will help get the two sides to the bargaining table. No one has yet found a solution to this crisis, so it'd be wise for Zelenskyy to follow Trump's path to lasting peace in the region.

Democratic narrative

Personal history with Trump should tell Zelenskyy to be wary of any promises. It was Trump's ethically murky call with Zelenskyy that got the former president impeached, and Trump has been vocal on the campaign trail about his skepticism over continuing to support Ukraine.

Japan: Court Acquits Man Who Spent 46 Years on Death Row

The Facts

  • A Japanese court on Thursday acquitted Iwao Hakamada — an 88-year-old former professional boxer sentenced to death in 1968 for a 1966 quadruple murder and arson — after it acknowledged multiple fabrications of evidence.

  • Hakamada was convicted of murdering his company manager and three of his family members and setting fire to their home. He was released in 2014 pending retrial and served his sentence at home after a DNA test cast doubt on the reliability of his conviction.

The Spin

Narrative A

A man endured wrongful imprisonment and severe physical and mental trauma for almost half a century for a crime he didn't commit. Though this verdict recognizes Hakamada's innocence and gives him his freedom back, it also reminds us of the irreversible harm caused by the cruelty of capital punishment. Japan must take steps to abolish the death penalty and lower hurdles for retrials to prevent this tragedy from happening again.

Narrative B

Japan has retained the death penalty as punishment for atrocious, extremely serious, and tragic crimes to bring justice to the bereaved families of victims and deter homicides. This tool of criminal justice serves an important function as a deterrent in society. Moreover, Japan hasn't executed anyone since July 2022, which shows that the death penalty is exercised only in the rarest of rare cases.

Narrative C

Hakamada's case exposes the flaws in Japan's notoriously slow-paced criminal justice system. People are forced to confess under duress through long periods of police detention and violent interrogation — by prosecutors who seek to convict suspects via threats, manipulation, and fake forensic evidence to avoid hurting their career statistics. Japan's legal system — which allows inhumane treatment of detainees and has a low threshold for admitting retrials — is in dire need of reform.

Narrative D

Justice delayed is justice denied. While there may be arguments for and against the death penalty, the fact is the real culprit is still at large. The establishment spent considerable time, energy, and money to prove Hakamada guilty. If he's proven innocent and gets to walk free after fighting a court battle for four decades, who killed his boss and his family? This case must be reopened to bring justice to the deceased.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that in at least 38.7% of US states capital punishment will be legal in 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Harris to Speak in Border State, Discuss Immigration

The Facts

  • US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris is traveling to Arizona on Friday to visit the US-Mexico border where she will be delivering a speech on immigration in Douglas, Arizona.

  • Harris is expected to pledge several immigration policies, including retaining Pres. Joe Biden's asylum restrictions — first implemented in June — as well as give more resources to Border Patrol and tackle the issue of fentanyl smuggling.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The American people, especially Arizonans, know Harris' immigration philosophy is terrible for the country. They also know she and Biden have let millions of illegal migrants into the country to eventually give them legal status and then citizenship, which means the ability to vote and thus reshape the American electorate to benefit Democrats. The White House is already conducting record-fast citizenship approvals, something Harris will only expedite further if she wins.

Democratic narrative

Harris isn't the first Democrat to deal with immigration criticism, but she is particularly effective on this topic. Harris is offering a smart and widely popular balance between effectively protecting the border from drug smugglers and expanding opportunities for immigrants seeking a good life in the US. Trump has used his influence to stall recent bipartisan immigration bills — Harris is looking for concrete solutions.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that there will be at least 500 million Americans by October 2114, according to a Metaculus prediction community.

Israel Says Target of Beirut Strike Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah

The Facts

  • Israel struck Beirut's southern suburbs on Friday, claiming that it had targeted Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the group's primary military headquarters. The strike collapsed at least four residential buildings. It was Israel's largest strike in Beirut since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began.

  • The strike came immediately after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, vowing that Israel would continue striking Lebanon and "degrading" Hezbollah until it had achieved its war goals.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Though the situation in the region continues to escalate, the US has stood firm in its role as a mediator. Israel has every right to respond to Hezbollah's daily terror attacks along its northern border. However, it's in no one's interest for tensions to explode into a wider regional war. The US will continue to work toward regional stability.

Pro-Israel narrative

Israel has been incredibly patient regarding the situation in the north, but after a year of daily terror attacks, Israel has been forced to deal with Hezbollah more aggressively. Friday's strike on Nasrallah demonstrates that Israel has established new "rules of engagement." Israel wants peace, but it can't allow Hezbollah and other Iran-backed terror groups to threaten its society.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Though Nasrallah's status is still unclear, Israel's attack on Beirut is surely a grievous war crime, as it flattened multiple residential buildings full of people. Israel has escalated the situation in the region every chance it has gotten, with the US supporting it every step of the way. Indeed, Israel may expand its genocidal campaign that began in Gaza to Lebanon.

Narrative D

The attacks against Lebanon are a clear example of Israeli terrorism in the region and its disregard for human life. Hezbollah opened a support front with Israel to stand in solidarity with Gaza which has faced a genocidal Israeli campaign. Its attacks will end when Israel withdraws from Gaza. Nonetheless, Hezbollah is ready and able to defend Lebanon from Israeli aggression.

Nerd narrative

There's a 75% chance that Israel will invade Lebanon before January 1, 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
