Biden to Attend Inauguration Regardless of Who Wins Election

The Facts

  • White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday said that outgoing US Pres. Joe Biden will attend the inauguration of his successor next year regardless of whether Democratic Vice Pres. Kamala Harris or Republican former Pres. Donald Trump wins the election.

  • Jean-Pierre added that Biden "believes in the peaceful transfer of power" and that attending the inauguration is "not about him" but rather "what the American people need to see."

The Spin

Democratic narrative

This proves Democrats support a peaceful transfer of power regardless of who wins. Meanwhile, Republicans have been indicating they again won't accept election results if Trump loses.

Republican narrative

Biden may be trying to ease tensions ahead of Election Day, but other Democrats are quietly planning to block Trump from returning to the White House. There's no doubt Democrats will challenge the election if Trump wins.

Nerd narrative

There's a 56% chance that the 2024 US presidential election will also be considered fraudulent by the losing party, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Banned N. Korean ICBM Takes Longest Flight Yet

The Facts

  • North Korea confirmed on Thursday that it launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which is in violation of UN sanctions. According to South Korea and Japan, the ICBM flew for 86 minutes before falling into the water.

  • This is believed to be the longest time an ICBM from North Korea has ever been in the air. According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), Pyongyang fired the missile at a "lofted angle," meaning it rose almost vertically instead of horizontally.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

This launch is unacceptable. To maintain peace and security across the Korean Peninsula and beyond, Pyongyang must stop its provocative and destabilizing acts. North Korea must also promptly resume disarmament talks instead of cooperating with Russia by providing weapons and soldiers.

Establishment-critical narrative

The US and its regional allies are to blame for escalated tensions on the peninsula, and this test should wake them up to their approach to relations in this region. North Korea, Russia, and China have never been closer, and the US must rethink its policies if it wants to ensure its security moving forward.

Nerd narrative

There's an 18% chance that the World Population Review will rate North and South Korea as being at war before Jan. 1, 2050, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Ancient Mayan City Discovered in Mexican Jungle

The Facts

  • A doctoral candidate at Northern Arizona University has accidentally discovered a long-lost Mayan city — now named Valeriana by archaeologists — in Mexico. The city, buried under the forest 50 sq. miles off Campeche, is estimated to have flourished between 750 and 850AD.

  • Anthropologist Luke Auld-Thomas stumbled upon the find when he revisited a 2013 survey conducted for a forest monitoring project using lidar (laser mapping) remote sensing technology to generate 3D images of the site. Researchers now suggest many more such lost cities may lie undiscovered.

The Spin

Narrative A

Imagine peering through time using beams of light and strands of DNA — that's exactly how modern archaeologists are revolutionizing our understanding of Maya civilization. Lidar technology has unveiled vast networks of ancient roads and cities hidden beneath the jungle canopy, completely transforming what we thought we knew about Maya transportation and urban planning. Meanwhile, DNA analysis is uncovering surprising secrets about their agricultural prowess, revealing previously unknown crops they cultivated. What once took researchers years to map on foot can now be accomplished in days, breathing new life into ancient stories and challenging long-held theories.

Narrative B

Peering beneath the surface of art and artifacts using modern technology may open doors that were meant to stay closed. Van Gogh's hidden self-portrait, discovered via X-ray beneath another painting, raised thorny questions about artistic privacy beyond the grave. While technologies like X-ray imaging and lidar can unveil precious historical secrets, they also challenge our respect for history's intended boundaries. When an artist deliberately conceals their work, or ancient cultures carefully seal their burial grounds, perhaps we should question whether our technological ability to uncover these secrets gives us the right to do so.

Prosecutors Seek 17-Year Sentence for Pentagon Leaker Jack Teixeira

The Facts

  • US prosecutors will seek a nearly 17-year prison sentence for Jack Teixeira, the Massachusetts Air National Guard member who admitted to leaking highly classified military secrets on Discord, a messaging and communication platform popular with gamers.

  • Teixeira, who was a cyber transport systems specialist for the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts, was arrested in April 2023 after he was identified as the leaker.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Teixeira took an oath to defend the US as well as its military secrets — secrets that are vital to US national security and the physical security of personnel serving overseas. In breaking that oath, doing so almost daily for a span of a year, Teixeira committed one of the biggest violations of the Espionage Act in American history. His actions demand strong consequences, both for himself and as a message to other potential leakers.

Establishment-critical narrative

While Teixeira's actions were wrong and misguided, they were not motivated by malice but rather by a desire to connect with friends he had made online, borne out of his autism. He is a youthful offender who has his whole life to look forward to. A lesser sentence would be more than sufficient for him to mature and pay the price for what he did — responsibility for which he has already acknowledged.

Trump Speaks From Garbage Truck After Biden's Remarks

The Facts

  • Republican candidate former Pres. Donald Trump spoke from a garbage truck and wore an orange safety vest in Green Bay, Wis., on Wednesday in reference to comments Pres. Joe Biden made during a video call on Tuesday night.

  • Biden earlier said that "the only garbage [he] see[s] floating out there is his supporter's," forcing the White House to claim that he referred only to Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian who described Puerto Rico as an "island of garbage" at a Trump rally, rather than supporters of the Republican candidate.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Trump's garbage truck stunt was the perfect troll in response to Biden and his party's continued snobbery towards hardworking Americans who are fed up with the woke status quo. While the White House may try and pretend Pres. Biden did not mean what he said, the Democratic Party's unpatriotic and divisive rhetoric has been heard loud and clear by the American people.

Democratic narrative

In peak hypocrisy, Republicans who adamantly defended Hinchliffe's distasteful Puerto Rico comments are the first to jump on and twist Pres. Biden's words. While the President's remarks may well have been clumsy, they are nothing compared to the dangerous rhetoric Trump and his MAGA movement continue to spew against their fellow Americans when it suits them to do so.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50.1% chance that Donald Trump will be elected US President in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Deadly Floods Strike Spain

The Facts

  • Over 150 people have died following severe flooding in eastern and southern Spain. The worst hit was eastern Valencia, which endured a historic "cold drop," or when autumnal cold air from the north moves over the warm water of the Mediterranean.

  • It was reportedly the country's worst natural disaster in decades, with areas like Barrio de la Torre experiencing a year's worth of rainfall in eight hours, cars stacked on top of each other, trees uprooted, downed powerlines, and damaged infrastructure.

The Spin

Narrative A

Despite weather reports warning of immediate danger, many people didn't receive emergency alerts until they were trapped in their cars and homes. There needs to be an investigation as to whether the government could have issued alerts earlier, closed down public services, and canceled classes. A probe of early warning protocols is warranted.

Narrative B

While criticism of the local government is understandable, it's important to recognize how unprecedentedly fast this storm appeared. Thanks to climate change, the "cold drop" phenomenon was exacerbated by the warming ocean temperatures, which allowed for such an unusual amount of rainfall in just eight hours. These storms will continue until climate change is addressed.

Narrative C

This was the result of ignored infrastructure needs and poor urban planning, not climate change. Following a flood in 1957, Valencia took profound action by diverting the Turia River to prevent future flooding. Sadly, it then allowed unchecked development in flood-prone zones, resulting in tragedies like this. Valencia has dealt with flooding for centuries, so blaming climate change will do nothing but let politicians off the hook for their dismal mismanagement.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that the rate of people (per 100,000) affected by natural disasters will be at least 2.8K in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon Targeted Primarily by Israel 30 Times in October

The Facts

  • According to the UN's peacekeeping force in South Lebanon (UNIFIL), the mission was targeted over 30 times in October — including attacks on its property and soldiers. It said it could "attribute" 20 such incidents to Israel, including seven that were "clearly deliberate."

  • A UNIFIL spokesperson said that while Israel targeted the agency's "watchtowers," "lighting," and "peacekeepers performing their monitoring tasks," Hezbollah or an affiliated group was likely behind a rocket attack on Monday.

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Israel has worked successfully with the US and UN to weaken Hezbollah and clear the threat to Israel's north. With Hezbollah's elite forces and missile stockpile significantly reduced, a diplomatic agreement could solidify these military successes, ensuring security along the border and allowing Israeli civilians to return home safely. Israel and UNIFIL are allies in the fight against terrorism, and now they must come together to establish a final peace agreement.

Pro-Israel narrative

Critics of Israel are ignoring the fact that UNIFIL has been co-opted by Hezbollah terrorists. According to captured Hezbollah operatives, the terror group paid off UNIFIL personnel to facilitate its goals — including control over UNIFIL cameras for surveillance. This undermines UNIFIL's mandate under Resolution 1701 to prevent Hezbollah's militarization along the Israeli border. Given UNIFIL's alleged complicity, Israel's defensive actions are justified.

Pro-Palestine narrative

Israel is committing war crimes not only against Palestinians and Lebanese but also against UN personnel. Its criminalization of UNRWA — a lifeline for Palestinian refugees — while targeting UN staff and facilities shows clear genocidal intent. New Knesset laws ban UNRWA, flouting international law and ignoring UN orders to protect Palestinian civilians. Israel should be removed from the UN just as South Africa was during its apartheid regime.

Nerd narrative

There is a 90% chance that the International Criminal Court bring charges against a member of the Israeli Government or Israeli Defense Force before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Russia Fines Google $20.5 Decillion

The Facts

  • According to Russian media, Google has been fined ₽2 undecillion (about $20.5 decillion) for blocking pro-Kremlin and state-run media outlets on YouTube — a fine that is expected to increase exponentially due to daily penalties over non-payment.

  • In 2020, a Russian court ordered Google to restore the YouTube accounts of Tsargrad and RIA FAN within nine months and pay ₽100K (about $1K) daily after that.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Though this mind-boggling fine may sound surreal, it’s a stark indicator of escalating tensions between foreign tech companies and Russian authorities over content control, free speech, and sanction compliance. It also highlights how Big Tech — and Google, in particular — engage in brazen censorship in order to push the West's mainstream narrative.

Pro-establishment narrative

The court's order is politically motivated and aimed at influencing Google's content moderation policies. Since the fine already exceeds Google's value, it's clear the company will not pay it. Moreover, as this jaw-dropping penalty doesn't adversely affect its business, Google is unlikely to bow to Russian pressure or reverse its action against the Kremlin's propaganda.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that the Russian government will officially ban YouTube before Jan. 1, 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Mexico: Majority of Supreme Court Justices Resign Over Judicial Reforms

The Facts

  • Eight out of Mexico's 11 Supreme Court justices, including court President Norma Piña, have announced their intent to resign in protest of recent judicial reform laws, including a provision that judges of all levels be elected rather than appointed.

  • Piña, who was slated to serve until 2030, wrote in her letter that her decision "does not imply [her] agreement with the separation from the position for which I was originally appointed" but rather is "an act of congruence and respect for the" current constitutional text.

The Spin

Narrative A

This group of justices has shown contempt for the Constitution they're obligated to uphold. Not only did they seek to illegally amend a constitutionally protected law, but now they want to neglect their duties and still receive a full pension. Just as they failed to block the judicial reform laws, they will fail again in this attempt to circumvent their job requirements.

Narrative B

Despite accusations from politicians like Obrador and Sheinbaum, these judges are not neglecting their duties nor violating the law. What they are doing is sticking up for the Mexican people who see this reform bill as an anti-democratic power grab. Judges are supposed to be free from public and governmental influence, which is what the court's majority is trying to prevent.
