CDC: U.S. Autism Rate Rises to 1 in 31 Children
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's shows that approximately 1 in 31 eight-year-old children (3.2%) were identified with autism spectrum disorder in 2022, up from 1 in 36 children (2.8%) in 2020, based on data from 16 sites across 14 states and Puerto Rico.
Prevalence rates varied significantly by region, ranging from 9.7 per 1,000 children in Texas (Laredo) to 53.1 per 1,000 in California. According to the report, regional differences potentially reflect variations in availability of services for early detection and evaluation practices.
Boys were diagnosed 3.4 times more frequently than girls, with rates of 49.2 per 1,000 for boys compared to 14.3 per 1,000 for girls. However, the male-to-female ratio has narrowed from 4.2 in 2018 to 3.4 in 2022.
Narrative A
Rising rates of autism in U.S. children reflect a serious public health crisis that demands urgent investigation into potential environmental causes. The sharp increase cannot be explained by diagnostics alone, pointing to likely preventable factors. Identifying triggers such as toxins, pollutants, pharmaceutical exposures—guided by the science wherever the evidence leads—is essential for future prevention and targeted care.
Narrative B
The rising autism prevalence in U.S. children—now 1 in 31—reflects better screening, broader diagnostic criteria, and improved access to care, especially in underserved communities. This is progress, not crisis. Yet some, like RFK Jr., push alarmist claims and discredited theories like the vaccine-autism myth, distracting from the real work of expanding support, closing care gaps, and fostering inclusion for those on the spectrum.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that the global mortality rate for children under the age of 5 in 2025 will be at least 3.48%, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Hong Kong Halts US Mail Service Over Tariff 'Bullying'
Hong Kong's government department for postal services, Hongkong Post, announced Wednesday that it would "suspend the acceptance of postal items containing goods destined to the U.S.," in response to President Donald Trump's "bullying" tariff hikes.
In a statement, Hongkong Post said it will stop accepting surface mail of U.S.-bound items immediately and air mail items starting from April 27. However, document-only mail will continue unaffected.
It added that it would contact senders of unshipped surface mail parcels starting April 22 to arrange returns and refund postage fees, stating, "the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the U.S.' unreasonable and bullying acts."
Anti-Trump narrative
Trump's tariff increases are akin to blackmail—an abusive and unreasonable act of economic bullying that unfairly targets Hong Kong's trading practices and forces residents to pay exorbitant fees for basic postal services. Hongkong Post will not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the U.S. as they don't comply with international practices.
Pro-establishment narrative
The elimination of the de minimis exemption is necessary to close a loophole that Chinese retailers have exploited to avoid proper customs inspections and import taxes, protect American industries, and ensure fair trade practices. Additionally, the duty-free treatment is being ended in order to combat China's role in America's synthetic opioid crisis.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that Hong Kong will stop being a Special Administrative Region of China by November 2046, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trump Orders Military Control of Border Land to Curb Migration
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum traveled to New Mexico on Tuesday to announce the emergency transfer of 109,651 acres of land along the U.S.-Mexico border to the Department of the Army for three years, marking a significant shift in border control strategy.
According to Burgum, the transfer "reflects Interior’s commitment to public safety, national security and responsible stewardship of our public lands." It follows a memorandum from the Trump administration on April 11 assigning the U.S. armed forces "the military missions of repelling the invasion and sealing the…southern border from unlawful entry."
The land that will be transferred is known as the Roosevelt Reservation, a 60-foot-wide (18 meters) federal buffer zone stretching across California, Arizona, and New Mexico, but will exclude federal Indian reservations.
Republican narrative
The transfer of federal land along the southern border to the military is a necessary step to combat illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and urgent national security threats. The designation of these areas as military installations will enable more effective border control and help prevent the entry of dangerous narcotics like fentanyl into American communities.
Left narrative
This initiative represents a concerning attempt to circumvent federal law and militarize the border region. It is a policy that treats the desperate migrants not as human beings seeking refuge but as enemy combatants and very likely falls foul of the Posse Comitatus Act, which forbids the use of the military in policing roles within the United States.
Nerd narrative
There's a 10% chance that the USA invade Mexico and acknowledge that invasion before January 20, 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Zelenskyy Rules Out Ceding Occupied Territories to Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ruled out the prospect of ceding occupied territories to Russia in remarks made alongside the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Odessa on Monday.
His comments came after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with President Vladimir Putin in Russia last week, in talks he described to Fox News productive and said Putin expressed desire for a "permanent" peace. Witkoff added that ceasefire talks centered around the "so-called five territories."
Witkoff appeared to reference Crimea, seized by Russia in 2014, and the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia—Ukrainian territories that Russian forces have occupied in the course of the war. Russia alleges the regions have become part of the country following referendums rejected by the international community.
Pro-Trump narrative
During Witkoff's five-hour meeting with Putin, many of the finer points of a potential ceasefire deal were discussed—including the so-called five territories—and significant progress was made. Not only would this be to the benefit of the world at large, there's a possibility to reshape U.S.-Russia economic relations for the benefit of both countries.
Pro-Ukraine narrative
Only the Ukrainians have the right to discuss the territories of their state, and the giving up of land to anyone—let alone Russia—is out of the question. Trump's representative is speaking out of turn by suggesting this would be a valid outcome of the conflict.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance there will be a bilateral cease-fire or peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine by December 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
France and Algeria Expel Diplomats in Escalating Crisis
France ordered the expulsion of 12 Algerian diplomats and recalled its ambassador on Tuesday, a day after Algiers announced the expulsion of an equal number of French diplomatic officials amid escalating bilateral tensions.
The French officials were expelled following the arrest of an Algerian consular official by the French authorities over the abduction of Amir Boukhors, an Algerian influencer and well-known critic of the Algerian government, in a Paris suburb in 2024. He was released a day later.
On Friday, French authorities arrested three men under investigation for the "kidnap, holding and arbitrary detention" of Boukhors, with the French anti-terror prosecutor claiming that one of the arrested men worked for the Algerian consulate.
Narrative A
The Algerian consular official's arrest is as much proof of France's deliberate intention to disrupt bilateral relations as the former colonial power's support for Morocco's Western Sahara plans. However, Algeria is a sovereign nation and will continue to resolutely defend its dignity.
Narrative B
France must defend its sovereign interests and prevent the country from becoming a playground for foreign security services, particularly given Algeria's seeming involvement in the kidnapping of a political refugee on French soil and its refusal to cooperate on critical security matters.
Nerd narrative
There is a 9% chance that Algeria will experience a successful coup d'état before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Peru's Ex-President, Wife Get 15 Years in Corruption Case
Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia were on Tuesday sentenced to 15 years in prison by the National Superior Court for laundering $3 million received from Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht and $200,000 from Venezuela's government for their 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns.
The court found that Heredia received U.S. dollars in cash in suitcases and backpacks at Venezuela's embassy in Lima for the 2006 election campaign. Judge Noyka Coronado declared the money to have come from illicit sources.
Odebrecht, now known as Novonor, admitted in 2016 to paying $788 million in bribes to foreign leaders and government officials and agreed to pay Brazil, the U.S., and Switzerland $3.5 billion in penalties.
Pro-government narrative
The evidence clearly shows a systematic pattern of corruption involving multiple high-ranking officials and illegal campaign contributions through sophisticated money laundering schemes. The sentencing demonstrates Peru's commitment to fighting corruption at the highest levels of government, with multiple former presidents now facing justice for their crimes.
Opposition narrative
The charges against Humala and Heredia represent political persecution, as prosecutors failed to prove the campaign funds' illegal origin. Heredia's urgent need for cancer treatment in Brazil and her successful asylum bid highlight humanitarian concerns that transcend the legal proceedings.
Nerd narrative
There's a 10% chance that Peru will experience a successful coup d'etat before 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
WTO: Trump Tariffs to Shrink Global Trade by 0.2% in 2025
On Wednesday, the World Trade Organization (WTO) revised its 2025 trade forecast from 2.7% growth to a 0.2% decline, primarily due to U.S. President Donald Trump's implementation of widespread tariffs, including a 145% levy on Chinese imports and a baseline 10% tariff on most other countries.
According to the WTO, North American trade is projected to experience the most severe impact, with exports set to decrease by 12.6% and imports by 9.6%. Meanwhile, Asia and Europe are still expected to maintain modest growth in both import and export volumes.
The trade tension between the U.S. and China is expected to result in "significant trade diversion," with Chinese exports projected to increase by 4% to 9% across non-North American regions as Beijing seeks alternative markets.
Pro-Trump narrative
The Trump administration's options are limited, given that the Biden administration left the U.S. a giant fiscal mess. Trump's tariffs will help bring manufacturing back to the U.S., boost the domestic economy, and address the trade imbalances that have led to overdependence on specific markets, particularly in critical sectors like semiconductors. Trump's trade policy isn't a fiscal policy; it's a fiscal necessity, a detox for the overheated financial system.
Anti-Trump narrative
Trump's so-called America First strategy will make everything more expensive for ordinary Americans and small businesses. His protectionist measures will backfire by impairing global economic growth, disrupting supply chains, and particularly impacting vulnerable developing economies. Soaring U.S. tariffs and broader trade policy uncertainty would hammer international commerce, sharply deteriorate global trade, and potentially trigger a global recession.
Nerd narrative
There's a 70% chance that a recession will begin in the U.S. in 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Report: Australian Politicians Took AU$245K in Tickets to Influence Gambling Ban
Reuters reported Wednesday that Australian politicians received approximately $245,000 Australian dollars ($147,000) worth of match tickets from major sporting leagues between June 2023 and March 2024 as part of a coordinated lobbying effort against proposed online gambling advertising restrictions.
According to the parliamentary gift register, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese received AU$29,000 worth of tickets, while Opposition Leader Peter Dutton received AU$21,350. Both attended grand finals and major sporting events as guests of the leagues.
Reuters' report claims the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (COMPPS) orchestrated a strategic campaign, seating politicians near sports officials who were briefed to discuss the impact of the proposed advertising ban.
Narrative A
The Albanese government and politicians across the aisle are accepting gifts that create concerning conflicts of interest, prioritizing industry profits over public health, and ignoring overwhelming public support for reform and a parliamentary inquiry's recommendation for a comprehensive ban on gambling advertising.
Narrative B
The sporting codes protect their financial sustainability and the future of Australian sports, as gambling revenue represents their fastest-growing income stream and supports broadcast rights deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars. A blanket ban on gambling advertising online will destroy the industry.
Nerd narrative
There's a 40% chance that the Coalition will win the next Australian federal election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Maryland Senator Visits El Salvador Amid Abrego Garcia Case
U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) on Wednesday arrived in El Salvador in search of answers about the potential return of imprisoned migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Van Hollen told reporters in El Salvador that he wasn't granted a meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele but spoke with the vice president instead. Van Hollen also said he was unable to meet with or get an update on the condition of Abrego Garcia.
Abrego Garcia was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in March and he was deported to El Salvador's CECOT prison despite a 2019 "withholding of removal" protection order.
Republican narrative
Van Hollen's trip left him utterly embarrassed as he accomplished nothing. Now he should answer for his shameless actions, as he's put in more effort to bring attention to the deportation of someone the government has classified as a terrorist than he's done to protect the citizens of Maryland.
Democratic narrative
Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported without the proper amount of due process and he should be returned immediately to the U.S. Neither the U.S. courts nor the government of El Salvador has found evidence he has an affiliation with MS-13. The administration must begin to comply with the court order.
Nerd narrative
There's a 20% chance that there will be at least twice as many deportations by ICE in Fiscal Year 2025 compared with Fiscal Year 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
