Principal Shot in Thailand School Siege Dies of Injuries

The Facts

  • Sasiphat Sinsamosorn, the director of Phatong Prathan Kiriwat School in Hat Yai, Thailand, died at 2 a.m. local time on Thursday from severe internal injuries and massive blood loss after being shot in the chest and torso during a school siege on Wednesday.

  • An 18-year-old male entered the school near Hat Yai shortly before 5 p.m. local time on Wednesday and opened fire, holding several teachers and students hostage during a two-hour standoff before he was overpowered by police.

  • The gunman used a 9mm pistol that he allegedly stole from a police officer after resisting arrest earlier that day, when authorities responded to reports of violent behavior. He attacked an officer with a knife and fled by motorcycle to the school.

The Spin

Narrative A

A heroic school director sacrificed her own life by negotiating to swap places with a student held hostage, embodying true selflessness and dedication to protecting children. Her legacy includes pioneering the "Phatong Model" and advancing education standards throughout her distinguished career. This tragedy demands stronger safety measures in schools to honor her courage and prevent future attacks.

Narrative B

A teenager with documented psychiatric issues and a substance abuse history, recently discharged from a hospital, easily obtained a police firearm and attacked a school, killing a teacher. Gun violence remains common in Thailand, with lax security allowing weapons to fall into dangerous hands. Systemic failures in mental health monitoring and firearm control enabled this preventable tragedy.

House Votes to Disapprove Trump's Canada Tariffs 219-211

The Facts

  • The U.S. House of Representatives voted 219 to 211 on Wednesday to pass a resolution disapproving of President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada. Six Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure, while one Democrat voted against it.

  • House Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to block the tariff vote through a procedural maneuver that would have barred such votes until July 31. The effort failed Tuesday, when three Republicans joined Democrats to defeat the measure 217 to 214.

  • Trump declared a national emergency in February 2025, invoking the International Economic Emergency Powers Act to impose 35% tariffs on Canadian goods not covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, citing issues over fentanyl trafficking.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump's tariffs are unconstitutional power grabs that make Americans poorer while Congress shamefully abdicates its constitutional duty to control taxation. These import taxes have already cost families $1,000 in 2025 and will hit $1,300 this year, artificially raising prices without bringing back jobs. The administration speaks out of both sides of its mouth, claiming tariffs are essential before courts while admitting alternative tools exist if they lose.

Pro-Trump narrative

House Republicans who voted against protecting Trump's tariffs betrayed America's sovereignty and the president's mandate to restore domestic manufacturing. This is the United States, not the International States of America, and tariffs remain the essential tool to address national emergencies and remake the global economy in America's favor. Congress needs to support the president's geopolitical strategy instead of undermining it.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that the effective U.S. tariff rate on goods being imported will be at least 9.13% at the end of 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Swiss to Vote on 10 Million Population Cap

The Facts

  • Swiss voters will decide on June 14 whether to cap the country's population at 10 million, following a proposal backed by the Swiss People's Party that gathered over 100,000 signatures to trigger a national vote under Switzerland's direct democracy system.

  • Switzerland's population currently stands at approximately 9.1 million and has grown by around 70% since 1960, with about 27% of residents being foreign nationals drawn to the nation by high wages and quality of life.

  • The initiative would require the government to limit immigration, including asylum seekers and family reunification, if the population exceeds 9.5 million, and could force Switzerland to withdraw from its free movement agreement with the EU if it reaches 10 million.

The Spin

Left narrative

Switzerland proves immigration works when done right — targeting skilled Europeans who share cultural values. With over 30% foreign-born residents, Switzerland ranks among the world's richest nations while maintaining low crime and high democratic trust. The country attracts hardworking immigrants from Germany, France and Italy who integrate smoothly, learn the language and contribute to economic growth without the social chaos plaguing other nations.

Right narrative

Capping Switzerland's population at 10 million isn't xenophobia — it's survival. Uncontrolled mass immigration strains housing, health care and infrastructure while eroding Swiss identity and quality of life. Germany's 2015 disaster and London losing its native majority prove that infinite growth through cheap labor destroys social cohesion. Smart nations choose quality over quantity and refuse to participate in Brussels' failed experiment.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that the peak human population before 2100 will be at least 9.85 billion, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Study: Lifelong Learning Cuts Alzheimer's Risk by 38%

The Facts

  • A study published in Neurology on Wednesday found that engaging in intellectually stimulating activities such as reading, writing or learning languages throughout life is associated with a 38% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and a 36% lower risk of mild cognitive impairment.

  • Researchers tracked 1,939 participants with an average age of 80 who did not have dementia at the study's start, following them for approximately eight years. During this period, 551 participants reportedly developed Alzheimer's disease and 719 developed mild cognitive impairment.

  • The study examined cognitive enrichment across three life stages: early enrichment before age 18 included access to books and learning foreign languages, middle age enrichment included library membership and museum visits, and later life enrichment included reading and playing games.

The Spin

Narrative A

Lifelong learning through reading, writing and language study slashes Alzheimer's risk by 38% and delays onset by five years. Public investment in libraries and early education programs that foster intellectual engagement could prevent millions of dementia cases worldwide. Cognitive enrichment throughout life fundamentally shapes brain health, making dementia prevention achievable through accessible educational resources.

Narrative B

Mental stimulation helps, but dementia prevention requires addressing systemic inequalities beyond individual habits. Air pollution, alcohol misuse, head injuries and lack of childhood education account for significant dementia risk. Government action on environmental hazards, affordable healthy food and universal primary education matters more than telling people to read books.

Gallup Ends 90-Year Tradition of Presidential Polls

The Facts

  • Gallup announced that it will cease publishing approval ratings of individual political figures, including the U.S. president, on Wednesday, ending a practice the analytical firm has maintained for nearly 90 years.

  • In a statement to multiple media outlets, Gallup claimed the decision reflected "an evolution in how Gallup focuses its public research and thought leadership," stating that the ratings no longer represented an area where Gallup could make "its most distinctive contribution."

  • Gallup began reporting on presidential approval ratings in 1938, when the company asked Americans whether they approved or disapproved of then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt's performance in office.

The Spin

Anti-Trump narrative

Despite what Gallup may claim, its choice to end its coverage of presidential approval ratings is a total and cowardly capitulation in the face of authoritarian intimidation. It's no mystery why they did this, given the torrent of threats and abuse from a president who cannot tolerate any data showing his historically poor performance. It's, nevertheless, a dark moment for democratic accountability.

Pro-Trump narrative

The end of Gallup's presidential approval tracking was a strategic decision made in response to a flawed polling model, not any political pressure on President Trump's part. As response rates have collapsed, traditional surveying has become unreliable and incapable of capturing public sentiment.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Donald Trump's net approval will be at least -12 on Nov. 2, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Ukrainian Athlete Disqualified from Winter Olympics Over Remembrance Helmet

The Facts

  • Ukrainian skeleton pilot Vladyslav Heraskevych was on Thursday disqualified from competing in the Winter Olympics over his refusal to not wear a helmet that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said violated its rules on political expression.

  • The 27-year-old athlete, who was his country's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games, had worn the helmet which featured pictures of Ukrainian athletes killed during the course of the war with Russia at a number of practice sessions earlier in the week. Despite warnings and meetings with IOC officials, he vowed to wear it in the competition.

  • In confirming his disqualification on Thursday, the IOC said it was "very keen" for Heraskevych to compete and that it had sought a middle ground with him in meetings — including granting him an exemption to wear a black arm band, as well as the option to display the helmet directly after the event — but added that "he did not consider any form of compromise."

The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Following each of the three practice days before Thursday's competition, the IOC informed Heraskevych that his helmet was not compliant with rules on athlete expression and gave him alternatives to mourn the loss of his former teammates. On each occasion, he refused to compromise and the IOC was regrettably given no choice but to issue his disqualification.

Pro-Ukraine narrative

This was a shocking misstep from the IOC that has cut short the Olympic ambitions of a young athlete. The message on the helmet was not a political one but one of remembrance and the IOC should apologize to Heraskevych for its wrong decision.

Nerd narrative

There's a 63.4% chance that Norway will lead the medal table at the 2026 Winter Olympics, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

House Passes SAVE America Act Requiring Voter ID, Citizenship Proof

The Facts

  • The U.S. House passed the SAVE America Act on Wednesday with a vote of 218 to 213, with only one Democrat — Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) — voting with Republicans in favor of the legislation. The bill requires proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot.

  • The legislation faces significant obstacles in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has stated that there are not enough votes to eliminate the filibuster, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has already publicly opposed the bill.

  • Murkowski stated that when Democrats attempted election reform in 2021, Republicans unanimously opposed it as federalizing elections. She noted that one-size-fits-all mandates from Washington seldom work in places like Alaska.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The SAVE America Act simply ensures election integrity by requiring proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, which most Americans already assume is the law. Democrats have blocked this common-sense bill for nine months because secure elections with clear rules threaten their political advantage in swing states. Requiring documentation to vote is no different than requiring a birth certificate for school enrollment or youth sports and there's no legitimate argument against it.

Democratic narrative

This bill functions as a modern poll tax, requiring passports costing $165 or birth certificates costing $40 to vote — creating barriers for millions of eligible voters. This legislation targets women who changed their names, poor Americans, older citizens and people of color under the false pretense of preventing voter fraud that studies have repeatedly debunked. Making voting expensive and complicated solves a nonexistent problem while suppressing legitimate voters.

Nerd narrative

There's an 80% chance that the 2026 U.S. midterm elections will be considered "free and fair," according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Bangladesh: Tarique Rahman's BNP Wins 'Landslide' Victory

The Facts

  • The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Tarique Rahman, claimed victory in the country's first election since student-led protests ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, held on Thursday. According to the Election Commission, the party secured 212 seats.

  • The election featured a contest between the BNP and an 11-party coalition headed by Jamaat-e-Islami's Shafiqur Rahman, which won 77 seats. The Awami League, formerly led by Hasina, was banned from participating in the polls. More than 127 million people were eligible to vote across 299 constituencies, and polling took place at over 42,000 centers nationwide.

  • Voter turnout reached 59.44%, according to the Election Commission. Nearly 900,000 security personnel were deployed to maintain law and order, while around 500 international observers monitored the process.

The Spin

Right narrative

This election demonstrated institutional maturity and responsible governance in Bangladesh. Law enforcement maintained neutrality, political parties showed restraint, and voters cast ballots without fear or disruption in a calm atmosphere that strengthened democratic institutions and public confidence.

Left narrative

The election was a complete farce marked by polling center seizures, gunfire, vote-buying and ballot tampering starting the evening before voting. Voter turnout was negligible across most centers, with many having no voters at all, while suspicious, abnormal increases appeared in voter lists, especially in Dhaka.

Nerd narrative

There's a 5% chance that Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return from exile before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Border Czar Ends Minnesota ICE Operation

The Facts

  • White House border czar Tom Homan announced on Thursday that Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota will conclude, with President Donald Trump's approval. Homan stated that a significant drawdown of immigration agents was already underway and would continue through the following week.

  • Federal authorities reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sweeps in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area resulted in the arrest of more than 4,000 people. The operation began in early December 2025 and, at its peak, involved approximately 3,000 additional ICE and Border Patrol personnel.

  • The operation saw the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, by federal immigration officials. Trump sent Homan to Minnesota in late January to address unrest following these incidents, removing Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino from control of surge operations.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Operation Metro Surge delivered exactly what was promised — over 4,000 arrests of dangerous criminals, including murderers, rapists and gang members who were making Minnesota communities unsafe. The operation succeeded in establishing crucial cooperation with local officials and dramatically reduced violent interference, proving that focused enforcement works and mass deportations will continue nationwide.

Anti-Trump narrative

Deploying 3,000 federal agents for over two months to arrest roughly 4,000 people in a metro area of 3 million represents a massive failure and waste of resources. The operation left two citizens dead, inflicted deep generational trauma and economic ruin and left communities with unanswered questions.

Nerd narrative

There's a 36% chance that the Insurrection Act or a state of martial law will be declared in relation to the 2026 U.S. midterms, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Report: Kim Jong Un's Daughter Named Successor-Designate

The Facts

  • South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers on Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's daughter, believed to be around 13 years old and widely thought to be named Kim Ju-ae, has reached a successor-designate stage.

  • Kim Ju-ae first appeared publicly in November 2022 at a long-range missile test and has since accompanied her father to weapons tests, military parades and a September 2025 summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

  • In January, Kim Ju-ae joined her parents on a visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a mausoleum housing the embalmed bodies of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.

The Spin

Narrative A

Kim Ju-ae has clearly moved beyond mere training to formal successor designation. South Korean intelligence confirms she's providing input on state policies and receiving laudatory acclaim as her father. Her prominent presence at military events and party functions signals deliberate preparation for leadership succession.

Narrative B

Spreading claims about Kim Ju-ae as a successor ignores the basic realities of North Korean power structures. No socialist country has ever elevated a daughter to leadership, and the regime's deeply patriarchal, militarized society makes female succession virtually impossible. Past successions were shrouded in total secrecy for years, which makes NIS' intelligence assessments questionable.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Kim Jong Un will no longer be the leader of North Korea by March 2044, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
