The Facts

  • Donald Trump's campaign issued a statement on Tuesday declaring that officials from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence had briefed the former president earlier that day on alleged threats from Iran to kill him.

  • It's unclear whether the information presented included new Iranian threats against the life of the Republican nominee. Protection for Trump was boosted in July following intelligence on an alleged Iranian plot.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Iran wants Kamala Harris in the Oval Office so its terrorist regime can continue essentially unchecked for four more years — and Tehran is planning to try and harm Donald Trump and his allies to ensure that. Trump is the only one running for office that is committed to protecting American interests.

Democratic narrative

The Trump campaign has exaggerated intelligence assessments on Iranian threats in a desperate attempt to deprecate Kamala Harris ahead of the presidential election. Iran does want to influence the vote and destabilize America, but there's no indication that Tehran favors any candidate.

Pro-Iran narrative

This is just another smear against Iran, which has no interest whatsoever in meddling in US internal affairs, let alone its presidential election this year. Though Donald Trump is indeed a criminal, Tehran is committed to bringing him to justice through legal means for ordering the assassination of Gen. Soleimani.
