It sounds counterintuitive, but the more news people consume, the more depressed and uninformed they become. People are constantly inundated with news stories, many of which are tragic, biased, and designed to keep us wanting more because the media is a profit-driven industry only concerned with clicks and views and not the quality of the product. As the media continues to decay, so will people's interest.
Despite its problems, the media will always be an important part of an informed citizen's world. The news is vitally important for a society that looks to keep in touch with the surrounding world and make informed decisions. Of course, misinformation and sad subjects cause problems, but that shouldn’t stop people from being informed and engaged — using deliberate ignorance as a crutch is foolish.
