The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented temporary flight restrictions for drones Wednesday over 22 New Jersey communities effective through Jan. 17. On Thursday, New York state followed suit, with Gov. Kathy Hochul announcing Federal Aviation Administration flight restrictions over some critical facilities.
The New Jersey ban covers a one-nautical-mile radius and heights up to 400 feet over specific sites, with exceptions for law enforcement, national defense, and disaster response missions. In New York, Hochul described the restrictions as "purely precautionary."
Drone bans are crucial for public safety because unauthorized or reckless drone flights can cause significant disruptions and safety hazards. Recreational drone flying is completely legal as long as operators follow simple rules like flying below 400 feet, keeping the drone in sight, and avoiding aircraft. However, violating these rules can lead to both annoying incidents, like airport closures, and dangerous ones — like harming people in the sky or on the ground.
The public needs federal drone legislation, not just temporary bans over New York and New Jersey. Laws were needed before these scares to regulate drones effectively, not to counter conspiracy theories but for safety. Public opposition was minimal, suggesting laws could have been passed quietly, but now, the heightened public awareness risks delay or misinterpretation of necessary rules. Bus-sized drones have no business scaring the public, and it's time they were regulated.
While these drone sightings have raised reasonable concerns, it's important not to forget that we're living through the beginning of the drone delivery industry. The Massachusetts drug delivery training took place during the current wave of drone hysteria. Drones are simply becoming part of normal life, and the public should remember this new normal in American skies.
The US government's lax response to these mysterious drone sightings — which have been reported across the world, not just in the US — suggests a strategy of using UFO narratives to distract or obscure. We know the government has the technology to identify these immediately, which makes the lack of action or transparency seem like a tactic to monitor public perception amid high geopolitical tension.
