The Facts

  • Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada's center-left New Democrats and a key ally of Justin Trudeau so far, announced on Friday that he will introduce a no-confidence vote to topple the minority Liberal government next year.

  • This is the latest political setback that the prime minister faces since his deputy and finance minister Chrystia Freeland stepped down over policy disagreements regarding Canada-US relations, with a major cabinet shuffle announced on Friday.

The Spin

Right narrative

How convenient for the New Democrats to have committed to toppling the long-disgraced Trudeau minority government now that the House of Commons is closed, meaning that a confidence vote is likely to be held just as Singh becomes eligible for a lifetime taxpayer-funded pension. Canada must get rid of Trudeau as soon as possible.

Left narrative

It's no secret that the Trudeau government is facing an existential threat in the wake of the departure of Freeland — and that the New Democrats intend to vote to topple the minority government only adds to that. Hopefully, the prime minister still has around a month to restore public faith in him as the right name to lead Canada.
