Adams is acting within his rights by maintaining this fund, and the contributors — small and large — know he's a man of good character and has paid his dues to get where he is. They're looking to help him at a time when it might be difficult for him financially to remain in public office and conduct a legal defense if he's ever charged with anything.
It seems the irony is lost on Adams that while his campaign is being investigated for taking illegal donations and being politically influenced by those funds, he's taking large donations from wealthy people who will want something in return down the road. By taking advantage of his position of power, Adams might be able to avoid legal accountability, but this fund is doing nothing to clean up his reputation.
