The injuries sustained in recent weeks by both Pelosi and McConnell illustrate the awkward reality that US politicians are just too old. From Biden to Trump, the overrepresentation of older individuals in politics has resulted in a gerontocracy, prompting suspicion over the capacity of those at the heart of government. Democracy must be reformed so that younger potential candidates have more opportunity to seek and hold political office, otherwise the interests and concerns of younger generations risk going completely unaddressed.
Regardless of age, the legacy of politicians such as Pelosi and McConnell cannot be argued with, and both continue to serve and contribute to US democracy on the frontlines. Even beyond the Senate, US voters recently selected Donald Trump to once again become the oldest US president in history — clearly, with age comes experience, and all demographics consider wisdom the most significant characteristic in the criteria for their representatives.
