Ahmed Eldidi, 62, who along with his son Mostafa Eldidi, 27, was arrested in July for allegedly planning an ISIS-inspired attack in Toronto, now faces additional war crimes charges.
The new charges include murder, mutilation, torture, and outrages upon personal dignity, allegedly committed between November 2014 and June 2015 before the elder Eldidi's arrival in Canada.
These first-ever war crimes charges brought during an in-country national security investigation are unprecedented and show how seriously the government is taking this case. The Eldidis may have eluded suspicion prior to obtaining Canadian citizenship and refugee status, but now they'll be held to a high standard of accountability that should also discourage others considering similar plots.
This was a major blunder by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government. These men never should've been in the country, let alone been granted citizenship and refugee status. Not only should the Eldidis be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, but Trudeau and the appropriate authorities should be made to answer for their near-tragic gaffe.
