Brazil: Bolsonaro Barred From Attending Trump Inauguration

The Facts

On Friday, Brazil's Supreme Court rejected an appeal from former Pres. Jair Bolsonaro for his request to have his passport temporarily returned to allow him to attend the inauguration of US Pres.-elect Donald Trump in Washington, DC, on Monday.
This comes as Justice Alexandre de Moraes declined to grant permission for the right-wing leader to leave Brazil from Jan. 17 to 22 the previous day on the grounds that Bolsonaro remains a flight risk as he faces several investigations and cases at home.
The decision aligns with the recommendation of the prosecutor general's office, as Paulo Gonet said that the public interest would be better served by keeping the now-private citizen in Brazil rather than allowing him to travel abroad.

There's a travel ban on Bolsonaro for a reason — and allowing him to travel to attend the Trump's inauguration ceremony would put his own private interest ahead of the public's. Bolsonaro is a coup plotter who has long advocated for Jan. 8, 2023, rioters to flee the country to avoid prosecution, so it's very likely that he would not return to Brazil as well.

This is the latest politically-motivated judicial decision against Bolsonaro as the country's top court colludes with the leftist government in an abhorrent lawfare targeting the opposition. If Bolsonaro were to flee Brazil and claim political asylum, he would have done that after he attended the inauguration of Argentina's Javier Milei in December 2023.
