The Philadelphia Eagles of the US National Football League (NFL) won their second-ever Super Bowl with a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La., preventing the Chiefs from achieving an unprecedented third straight championship.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts earned Super Bowl Most Valuable Player honors after completing 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and setting a Super Bowl rushing record for quarterbacks with 72 yards while contributing three total touchdowns.
The Eagles' defense sacked, or tackled behind the line of scrimmage, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes six times and forced multiple turnovers, including an interception-turned-touchdown, known as a "pick-six," by rookie Cooper DeJean that helped build a 24-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles' genius play-calling dismantled the Chiefs, turning Patrick Mahomes into a non-factor. By never blitzing yet generating relentless pressure with their front four linemen, they forced Mahomes into six sacks, two interceptions, and countless rushed throws. Their defensive line dominated despite Kansas City's expensive offensive line investments, proving that elite scheming and execution, not just talent, dictated this Super Bowl blowout.
While quarterbacks should certainly be expected to lead their teams in big games, Mahomes isn't the only one to blame. Despite having a reliable running back in Kareem Hunt all season, head coach Andy Reid completely abandoned the run game from the start, calling just one rushing play in the first four drives. This led to repeated three-and-outs — forcing Mahomes into predictable passing situations against relentless Eagles pressure.
