The Facts

  • Four women who worked for Smokey Robinson accused the Motown legend of repeatedly sexually assaulting and raping them in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday.
  • The suit, seeking $50 million in damages and filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accused the 85-year-old of alleged sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and gender-based violence as well as a number of labor violations between 2007 and last year.
  • It also named Robinson's wife, Frances Robinson — accusing her of contributing to a hostile work environment and of using "ethnically pejorative words and language."

The Spin

Narrative A

As detailed by the four women, Robinson abused his power to perpetrate a number of sexual offenses against them. They did not previously come forward because they feared not being paid, the embarrassment it would cause and because of possible reprisals from the celebrity.

Narrative B

While these are troubling accusations against the Motown star that deserve careful scrutiny, Robinson has yet to respond, and the allegations have yet to be independently tested.
