More than 80% of the world’s reefs hit by bleaching after worst global event on record
Guardian2 days
While conservation efforts — like coral propagation and rescue missions — are underway globally to protect global biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities, they provide only short-term relief. To truly safeguard coral reefs, these actions must be paired with efforts to tackle their root threat: global warming.
While coral bleaching is concerning, it’s often overstated; reefs have shown resilience and the ability to recover over time. Resources might be better spent addressing more immediate human concerns like poverty and infrastructure rather than global climate interventions.
