HHS Launches Autism Database Project

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Wednesday that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will partner to create a research platform using Medicare and Medicaid data to study autism through insurance claims, medical records, and wearable device data.

In a statement, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that the department was "pulling back the curtain … to deliver the honest answers families have waited far too long to hear" and that the database would "uncover the root causes of autism and other chronic diseases."

The release stated that the "real-world data platform" will focus on autism diagnoses, the outcomes of medical and behavioral interventions, health and care disparities according to demography and geography, and the economic burden on families and health care systems.

The announcement met with skepticism from some experts. Alison Singer, president of the Autism Science Foundation, criticized the project’s alleged "lack of clarity" concerning data protection. Jill Escher, president of the National Council on Severe Autism, meanwhile, expressed concern about the lack of "hypothesis building" in the HHS’ approach.

In Illinois, Governor J.B. Pritzker responded by signing an executive order restricting state agencies from collecting or sharing autism-related data without medical or legal necessity. Any data that meets these thresholds must be limited to the minimum necessary, handled in line with privacy regulations, and used only with "informed consent."

According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in April, one in 31 American eight-year-olds received an autism diagnosis in 2022, while a 2024 study by Drexel University found that there were 846,350 autistic Medicaid enrollees in 2016.
