Though Israeli forces likely do not target civilians in the West Bank, more must be done to prevent unnecessary Palestinian deaths. Israeli settlers have been able to kill Palestinians with virtual impunity, and Israel must address this injustice. The Trump administration should return to the United States' traditional policy toward Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

This violent incident broke out after dozens of Palestinian terrorists began throwing stones at Jewish shepherds, which quickly escalated into a confrontation. Furthermore, left-wing Israeli activists enflamed the situation by accompanying the Palestinian attackers. Though it is tragic that deaths occurred, these Jewish shepherds were defending themselves.

This killing of an American citizen by Israeli settlers demonstrates both Israel's systematic attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the United States' disregard for its own citizens when it comes to Israel. If an American citizen was killed like this in any other country, the United States would quickly intervene. However, there is an Israeli exception in which even Americans are not safe from Israel's war machine.
