The Spin

Republican narrative

This facility is a godsend to every American who voted for immigration reform. While critics cite emotion-driven anecdotes of family separation, they ignore decades of unfettered mass immigration, to the point where the government can't possibly vet every illegal. President Trump must continue to boldly streamline enforcement, arrest illegal migrants and deport them. Once that's done, the country can discuss who and how many immigrants should come to America.

Democratic narrative

Trump's dream of deporting every immigrant is not only amoral — ripping families out of communities they've lived in for years — but fiscally careless. The government doesn't have the money to detain these people safely, leaving thousands of immigrants in crowded prisons without adequate bedding or bathrooms. Conditions will only be worse in El Paso, where the extreme heat will cause harm to detainees.
